Egress Prevent alternative that a team can install itself
Egress Prevent, now sold by KnowBe4, catches misaddressed email and attachments at the mail server on enterprise terms. Presend catches secrets, PII, banned phrases and AI slop in the compose box, per person, for $3 a month.
Egress Prevent is an outbound DLP product for organisations that have someone to run it. Presend is a send gate for the people writing the messages. If you need mail-server enforcement and an admin console, stay with Prevent. If you need the check to exist at all, this week, on Slack as well as email, Presend is the practical answer.
What Egress Prevent does
Egress Prevent inspects outbound email for misaddressed recipients, mis-attached files and policy violations, using contextual analysis and a social graph of who normally emails whom. KnowBe4 completed its acquisition of Egress in 2024 and now sells the product as KnowBe4 Prevent inside its cloud email security suite, priced by quote.
Why people look elsewhere
- It is an IT purchase with an IT rollout. Small teams with the same exposure cannot get it without a procurement cycle.
- It covers email. The same customer data pasted into Slack, a support ticket, or a LinkedIn message is out of scope.
- Warnings are policy-driven from the console; an individual cannot add a check for the mistake they personally keep making.
- It has nothing to say about how a message reads, only where it goes and what it carries.

Enforcement Versus a Gate
Egress Prevent is an enforcement product. It sits in the mail path or in Outlook, applies policies an administrator wrote, and can stop a message regardless of what the sender thinks. That is the right shape for a regulated organisation, and it is the reason it costs what it costs and takes as long as it takes to roll out.
Presend is a gate the sender walks through. It runs in the browser, on the draft, and shows a confirmation when it finds something classed as risk. The sender can still send. What changes is that they cannot send without having looked.
Those are different guarantees. If your auditor needs the first one, read no further — Presend is not a replacement. If what you actually need is for people to stop pasting keys into messages, the second one turns out to be enough, and it is available this afternoon.
The Overlap
Both products catch the same core set of content problems before send:
- Credentials and API keys in the body. Presend matches known vendor prefixes and, more usefully, anything the sentence itself labels — "the password is", "here's the token" — even when the value has no recognisable shape.
- Numbers matching SSN and payment-card formats.
- Phrases an organisation has ruled out. In Prevent this is a DLP policy; in Presend it is a banned-phrase rule anyone on the team can add.
Both raise a confirmation before the message goes. Prevent's can be configured to hard-block; Presend's is a confirmation sheet the sender must answer.
Where Prevent Is Ahead
Recipient analysis. Prevent models who you normally email and flags the anomaly. Presend shows you every external recipient by address before send and lets you write rules against them; it does not learn your graph.
Attachments. Prevent inspects the file. Presend checks that a message which says "attached" has something attached, and stops there.
Administration. Prevent has a console, reporting, quarantine and release. Presend's Team plan has shared rules and a dashboard of findings, not a message hold.
Where Presend Is Ahead
Surface coverage. Prevent protects email. Presend runs in Gmail and Outlook Web, guards plain-Enter sends in Slack, checks LinkedIn DMs and posts, X, and every other textarea on the web. The rule set is filtered by channel, so email-only checks like subject and sign-off stay in email while secrets, PII and slop run everywhere.
The writing itself. Presend checks whether the message reads like a model wrote it, and whether it sounds like you. Neither is a DLP concern, and both are why an outbound message damages a relationship even when it is addressed correctly.
Who can add a rule. In Presend the person who keeps making the mistake writes the check for it, in plain English, with a severity. They do not file a ticket.
Time to value. Install, sign in, write. There is no deployment.

KnowBe4 does not publish Prevent pricing. Presend is free for twenty-five AI checks a day, $3 a month for Pro, and $29 per user per month for Team, which adds org-wide rules, the Custom Actions pipeline and webhooks.
Stay with Egress Prevent if
- You already run KnowBe4 for training and Prevent comes in the same contract.
- Your compliance posture requires server-side enforcement that a user cannot uninstall.
- Mis-attached files are your main exposure.
Switch to Presend if
- There is no one to run a DLP console and there is not going to be.
- Your outbound risk lives in Slack and LinkedIn as much as in email.
- You want the person who keeps making a specific mistake to be able to add a check for it themselves.
